The Elm Grove Beer Garden Returns May 27 with Additional Hours, Food Trucks, Live Music and More

Third Space Brewing will once again operate a beer garden in the Elm Grove Village Park with several additions in 2022.

ELM GROVE, Wisc. – April 27, 2022 – Third Space Brewing will revive its summer beer garden in the Elm Grove Village Park with several new additions in 2022.  In 2021 the Milwaukee craft brewery embarked on a trial run of a pop-up beer garden in partnership with the Village of Elm Grove. Due to the popularity of the beer garden, Elm Grove has agreed to welcome Third Space to expand upon the beer garden’s offerings in 2022.

The 2022 Elm Grove Beer Garden will add days and hours to its schedule. The Beer Garden will open Fridays 4-9 p.m., Saturdays 12-9 p.m., and Sundays 12-6 p.m. The beer garden will also be open five Tuesdays this summer for the park’s Tunes on Tuesday program with live music from local musicians. Tunes won’t be limited to Tuesdays either this summer as Third Space Brewing is contracting with local artists to play the beer garden on many Friday and Saturday evenings as well.

Third Space will also welcome various food vendors to the beer garden and expand its pre-packaged snack options for days where there is no food vendor. To create a more classic beer garden feel, Third Space will add lighting and several dedicated beer garden tables.

“Our goal this year is to make the Elm Grove Beer Garden the essential location to gather with friends and family this summer” stated Third Space Brewing’s Co-Founder and President, Andy Gehl. “Everyone had a great time last year, but we received numerous requests to take the beer garden to the next level with food, music, and a dedicated seating area, so we are working with the village to create the beer garden experience residents are seeking” added Gehl.

In 2022, the beer garden will add extended hours on Saturday afternoons and be open on Sundays. Third Space will also open the beer garden for the popular Fourth of July Family Festival leading up to the annual fireworks show in the park. In addition to bringing in live music, Third Space also plans to have more rotating beer offerings and special events like beer dinners to draw more residents to the beer garden on a regular basis. Customers can keep track of special events, and the live music and food truck schedule at www.thirdspacebrewing.com/elmgrovebeergarden

Third Space will kick off the beer garden season with a live music performance by the Tom and Evan Leahy Band and food from Riley’s Good Dogs on Friday May 27th.

Third Space will continue to operate its onsite tap room and newly expanded on-site beer garden at the brewery located at 1505. W. St. Paul Ave. in Milwaukee, where it will also host live music throughout the summer on a newly constructed dual purpose covered deck.

Third Space Brewing Tunes Up Its Tap Room and Beer Garden

Third Space Brewing Tunes Up Its Tap Room and Beer Garden to Create an Even More Inviting “Third Space” For Guests and Private Parties

Third Space will unveil the first phase of improvements Friday April 1st with a Tap Room Tune Up Party featuring a Live DJ, Local Food Truck, & Beer Release

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – April 1, 2022 – Third Space Brewing is refreshing the look and feel of its tap room and beer garden at 1505 W. St. Paul Avenue in Milwaukee’s Menomonee River Valley. The brewery will celebrate completion of the first two phases of the project Friday April 1 with a Tap Room Tune Up Party. The party will feature a live DJ from 5-8p.m., local food truck, Twisted Plants, a double beer release, and for the first time, wine by the glass.

The first phase of the project officially kicked off in the fall of 2021 with the addition of a new expanded beer garden space on a former railroad loading dock to the south of the brewery’s already expansive beer garden. That space includes an outdoor bar, seating for 80 guests, and a green space for yard games and casual seating with fire pits. The expanded beer garden space will mostly be used for private outdoor events for groups up to 240 in size but will also be used as additional seating on busy summer days.

The second phase of the refresh includes several changes inside the tap room and private event space. Those changes include a remodeled back bar and menu board with a mural that extends across the full north wall of the tap room to better showcase the Third Space brand. Third Space has brought in new custom-built tables and two new built-in banquettes to add unique comfortable seating areas for guests.

The brewery has repainted the walls with warmer tones and installed new lighting throughout the tap room. They have added two large TVs and will soon unveil a completely revamped sound system to enhance the regular customer experience but also to make Third Space a great additional destination for guests looking to watch big sporting events. Third Space is also installing air conditioning in the tap room to make it a more comfortable space in the hot summer months and a privacy curtain and A/V improvements in the private event space.

The third phase of the project moves back outside where Third Space is building a large, covered deck that will connect the private interior space with the already completed extended beer garden. Third Space will also improve the beer garden lighting and sound systems to better entertain beer lovers enjoying one of the largest outdoor beer gardens in the Milwaukee area. The new deck will primarily be used as additional private event space and shaded seating for day-to-day guests but will also be used for live music throughout the summer.

According to Third Space Co-Founder and President, Andy Gehl, “the goal of the tap room refresh is to make our brewery an even more inviting ‘third space’ for our guests and a go-to event space for private parties. Our company’s vision is to provide a welcoming third space for all. Brewing high-quality beer and employing friendly and welcoming staff are key components to achieving that vision but it starts with the space itself being warm and inviting.”

Once all phases are complete, Third Space will have three separate event spaces for private parties which can also be combined with one another for the perfect combination of indoor/outdoor space, sunshine, and shade. Third Space also recently obtained permits to make and sell wine, cider, & mead, which should help further enhance the private event and day-to-day experience. Groups interested in learning more about private bookings should contact the events team at events@thirdspacebrewing.com.

Beer, music, wine, and food lovers can check out the tap room improvements this Friday when Third Space releases two special beers and welcomes both a live DJ and local food truck, Twisted Plants, for a Tap Room Tune Up Party. The beer releases include the return of a fan favorite, Java Blanca Coffee Cream Ale, and a new collaboration beer brewed with Lion’s Tail Brewing Company.

Java Blanca is a collaboration with local coffee roaster, Stone Creek Coffee, and is a popular beer that has not been on the menu at Third Space for the last few years. The collaboration beer with Lion’s Tail is a West Coast Pilsner called Cool Kids. Both beers will be available on draft and in cans to go. The DJ and Food Truck are scheduled from 5-8p.m. but the brewery is open 2-10p.m.

Third Space Brewing expects the beer garden tune up to be ready no later than Memorial Day weekend when it also plans to reopen its Elm Grove Beer Garden in the Elm Grove Village Park, which will also see several enhancements this season.

Like A Girl IPA Supports Women in the Brewing Industry

Third Space Brewing will donate proceeds from Like A Girl IPA, created and brewed by its female brewers, to the Pink Boots Society.

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – March 25, 2021 – At 2:00 P.M., March 25th, Third Space Brewing will release Like A Girl IPA at its tap room at 1505 W. St. Paul Avenue in the Menomonee River Valley. The beer is a collaboration between the female brewers at Third Space Brewing, the Pink Boots Society, Malteurop, and Yakima Chief Hops.

Third Space Brewing will donate a portion of proceeds from sales of Like A Girl to the Wisconsin Chapter of the Pink Boots Society to help provide scholarships, educational opportunities, and other services to the amazing women who call Wisconsin’s beer industry their home.

On International Women’s Day (March 8th), Third Space Brewing’s female brew team of Sam Danen and Amy Rohrschneider brewed Like A Girl with members of the Wisconsin Pink Boots Society and other female employees of Third Space Brewing and Malteurop.

2022 is the second year Third Space Brewing has released Like A Girl IPA. The project was created by the female brewing team in 2021 to great excitement from the beer community as customers lined up on the release day to purchase 4-packs of Like A Girl, knowing a portion of proceeds were going to support women in brewing. Third Space Brewing donated $4,000 in proceeds from Like A Girl sales in 2021 to the Wisconsin Pink Boots Society and hopes to raise a similar amount in 2022.

Danen and Rohrschneider tweaked the 2022 Like A Girl IPA recipe to showcase the aromas of citrus, sweet aromatics and berry in the 2022 Pink Boots Hop Blend, a special blend created by Yakima Chief Hops especially for Pink Boots Society and the Collaboration Brew Day.

The beer will be available both on tap and in 4-packs of 16oz cans at the brewery starting March 25. A small quantity of the beer will also reach distribution at select retailers in the coming weeks. Both female brewers will be on hand today for a special release day event with the group Barley’s Angels of Milwaukee, another group of women connected to the beer industry. Barley’s Angels is a social organization committed to involving women in the education and enjoyment of craft beer.

The Like A Girl project has been led Samantha Danen, who was also recently elected as the chairperson for the Wisconsin Chapter of the Pink Boots Society. The goal of the project is to highlight the roles strong women fill in every aspect of the beer business and to raise funds to help more women pursue a career in this traditionally male-dominated industry. The project is part of Pink Boots Society’s Collaboration Brew Day, in which breweries across the country brewed beers to honor International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month.  The team at Malteurop stepped in this year to donate 100% of the malt for Like A Girl to help further the amount Third Space can donate to Pink Boots Society.

According to Danen, “this Collaboration Brew Day is a great example of how incredible things happen when women support each other.  Not only is it a day for celebration, but a day of raising the profile of women’s roles in the beer industry.  My hope is that days like these serve as an inspiration for future generations of girls, and really instill a sense of belonging for women who are passionate about beer.”

5 Year Solera Blend

So what is this Solera beer we’re releasing for our 5 year anniversary?

First let’s tell you about the Solera process…

Solera is a process for aging liquids that utilizes fractional blending, so the finished product is a mixture of ages.  It is common in Sherry wine and Balsamic vinegar and less common in other products like beer, other types of wine and spirits.

The idea is that a large batch is produced and filled into containers, usually wooden barrels.  At a certain interval, a portion of those barrels are emptied to fill a smaller number of barrels leaving a some of the liquid behind.  The original barrels are topped up with a fresh batch.  This process is repeated with multiple additional layers or criaderas. Each time, a portion of the liquid is transferred to a smaller number of barrels and then the partially emptied barrels are topped up from the previous layer all the way back to the original layer which is topped with a fresh batch.

Using this process, we will release a new iteration of our Anniversary Solera each year, but every new blend will include portions of every previous year’s blend.

So how did we employ the Solera process to make Five and future Anniversary Soleras?

First, we started with a unique beer recipe inspired by the character of Sherry wine (the Solera-aged beverage that inspired this endeavor).  Our beer recipe is closest to an Old Ale or English Barleywine but it is very much its own unique creation. We brewed it with raisin juice and local honey.

We crafted the first batch for FIVE back in November 2019, then placed it in 16 Heaven Hill bourbon barrels to begin the aging process.  It aged in the bourbon barrels about a year and then most of the beer was transferred in November 2020 to 12 brandy barrels that previously held Buffalo Trace bourbon. We left 25% of the original batch behind to start the future Solera blending process and then topped up the bourbon barrels with a brand-new batch, with a slightly tweaked recipe. This new batch started the 2022 Anniversary Solera’s aging process for those keeping score.

With 2021’s FIVE now in brandy barrels and 2022’s SIX aging in the original bourbon barrels, we began to prep the final criadera, receiving 6 PX Sherry barrels from Spain. In March 2021, we moved FIVE from the brandy barrels into the PX Sherry barrels, again leaving a portion behind. We then moved SIX from the bourbon barrels into the brandy barrels, leaving a portion of SIX behind for the next year’s blend, you guessed it, SEVEN. Note, at this stage SIX is blended with portions of both the bourbon-barrel and brandy-barrel aged FIVE.

At that time, we brewed the 2023 batch, again with a slightly tweaked recipe and we filled the bourbon barrel criadera with the new batch, which will eventually become SEVEN in 2023. Are you still with us?

When we bottle FIVE, it will have aged just under a year in bourbon, approximately four months in brandy and six months in Sherry. Over time we will modify the aging lengths and recipes slightly and each year’s new blend will have portions of each of the previous year’s blends included.

When SIX comes out in 2022, it will have portions of FIVE blended in and will have aged in the same three criaderas, bourbon, brandy, and PX Sherry. When SEVEN comes out in 2023, it will have portions of both FIVE and SIX blended in. Over time, we will replace the criaderas as barrels lose their character but we will continue to blend in portion of the previous year’s beer into every subsequent batch, meaning ten years from now, you’ll be enjoying a blend that includes some of the same beer you’ll get to try at this year’s 5th Anniversary Party.

We hope you are as excited as we are to try each year’s blend and compare them to one another over time.

The ABV of Five is 16%.

We may still have some bottles of this unique brew available but they won’t be around long. Click here to pre-order a bottle today.

Wisconsin IPA Fest is Back August 28th at Third Space Brewing

The 5th Annual Wisconsin IPA Fest welcomes breweries from across the state of Wisconsin to the beer garden at Third Space Brewing to crown the state’s best IPA.

Wisconsin IPA Fest is back! On August 28, Third Space Brewing will welcome 50 breweries and 850 ticketholders to its massive beer garden for a one-of-a-kind beer festival that celebrates the most popular beer style in the country, the IPA. Purchase your tickets here.

The event is limited to Wisconsin breweries and is more or less open to every brewery in the state who wants to make the trip to Milwaukee to show off their best IPAs. This year’s event will top out at 50 breweries but unlike past years each brewery is welcome to bring 3-4 different beers to share. Most of the beers will be IPAs but each brewery is allowed to bring one non-IPA to help cleanse people’s palates from all those hops.

“We created the Wisconsin IPA Fest to showcase the awesome hoppy beers brewers are making in Wisconsin” stated Third Space Co-Founder and President, Andy Gehl. “The coasts always get the love when it comes to IPAs but we are making great hoppy beers right here in the Midwest and we want to celebrate that in one giant festival” added Gehl.

The Wisconsin IPA Fest is also a friendly competition to crown the “Best IPA in Wisconsin”. Each brewery will choose one IPA to submit to the competition and send their own brewer-judges. The winner takes home the coveted WI IPA Fest Trophy, a replica of a fermentation tank made by local equipment supplier, Quality Tank Solutions. Attendees at Wisconsin IPA Fest also get to vote on the People’s Choice Winner.

“The competition is more about gathering the brewers of our state to have a little fun together than it is about winning” reported Third Space Co-Founder and Brewmaster, Kevin Wright. “In fact, this whole event is about bringing people together to enjoy locally brewed IPAs, something we’ve all been looking forward to for a long time” added Wright.

The 2021 Wisconsin IPA Fest runs from 2:00-5:00p.m. on August 28. This year’s event includes unlimited IPA sampling, a Wisconsin IPA Fest Pint Glass, and a 2021 Wisconsin IPA Fest Sticker for $59. Early Bird Tickets to the event are $49 but they are only available through July 9 (or until they sell out).

VIP Tickets grant early access to the event at 1:00 and access to a special VIP lounge with extra seating, extra shade, and a private VIP bar with special VIP-only IPAs on tap. VIPs also get to take home a 4-pack of the 2021 Collaboration IPA. Each year, Third Space brews a collaboration IPA for the event with the winner of the previous year’s event. This year, Third Space will collaborate with Waukesha’s Raised Grain Brewing, who won the People’s Choice in the 2020 Virtual IPA Fest.

The event will also feature a make your own T-shirt station and local food trucks with food for purchase.

More details and a link to purchase tickets can be found at HERE.

The Elm Grove Park Beer Garden will operate Fridays from 4-9 p.m. and Saturday from 3-9 p.m. from June 4 through October 23. The beer garden will also be open on select Tuesdays for the park’s Tunes on Tuesdays programming with live music in the beer garden those nights.

Elm Grove native and Co-Founder of Third Space Brewing, Andy Gehl, explained the team’s excitement for this new beer garden experience: “We look forward to making the Elm Grove Park even more of a happy place for the local community. Third Space beers have always been popular in Elm Grove and this beautiful park I grew up with is the perfect place for the family-friendly beer garden experience we plan to offer.”

Third Space prides itself on brewing high-quality, flavorful, and supremely balanced craft beer in Milwaukee’s historic Menomonee River Valley. Co-founders Kevin Wright and Andy Gehl are long-time friends who have reunited in their hometown to create a craft brewery that welcomes everyone into the craft beer world – you have your home, you have your work, but everyone needs a Third Space.

They focus on quality in every step, from ingredients and brewing equipment, all the way to packaging and monitoring on-shelf times to ensure the absolute best product.

Third Space opened in September 2016 and has already won several awards. Third Space has won 4 Great American Beer Festival medals, was named Best New Brewer in Wisconsin by Rate Beer in 2017 and was voted Best Microbrewery in Milwaukee three years in a row in the Shepherd Express Best of Milwaukee competition (2017-2019). In 2018 Third Space was named one of the 50 fastest growing craft breweries in the country by the Brewers Association. In 2021, Third Space has expanded its distribution to cover the entire state of Wisconsin.

Third Space Brewing to Expand Distribution Statewide in April 2021

Third Space Brewing to Expand Distribution Statewide in April 2021

The Milwaukee craft brewery will expand its distribution territory to include all of Western, Northwestern, Central, and Northern Wisconsin in 2021.

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – March 22, 2021 – Despite disruptions associated with the pandemic, Third Space Brewing increased sales of its popular craft beers more than 23 percent in 2020 to 10,695 barrels—without setting foot in a large portion of Wisconsin. In 2021, the growing craft brewery will expand its distribution territory to include the remainder of Wisconsin, with expectations of selling over 14,000 barrels statewide. The territory expansion will bring Third Space Brewing to cities such as La Crosse, Eau Claire, Hudson, Superior, Steven’s Point, Wausau, Minocqua, and many others.

Since opening in September 2016, the Milwaukee-based craft brewery has grown its distribution footprint and its sales every year. “We have taken an organic approach to our growth, ensuring we can first meet the demand for our products in existing markets while allowing demand to sufficiently build in new territories before expanding further,” reported Third Space Brewing Co-Founder & President, Andy Gehl.

In 2018, Third Space Brewing was named one of the 50 Fastest Growing Craft Breweries in the United States by the Brewers Association, at the time selling 5,300 barrels of beer in just Southeastern Wisconsin. The brewery grew to 8,700 barrels in 2019 and then again in 2020 (to 10,695) despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

Starting in April 2021, Third Space will expand its partnerships with three Wisconsin wholesalers to take its popular beers statewide. Third Space will work with Dean Distributing across Northern Wisconsin, General Beer in parts of Central Wisconsin and Beechwood Sales & Service in Western, Northwestern, and portions of Central Wisconsin.

All three wholesalers are looking forward to bringing the Third Space brand statewide:

According to Benjamin Minkoff, Craft Beer Director for General Beverage, “over the last several years, we have recognized Third Space as one of the most exciting, innovative and growing craft brewers in the Wisconsin area. In 2020, we began distributing Third Space in the Northeast Wisconsin region and have seen outstanding initial success and adoption by beer drinkers in the area.  We are thrilled by the opportunity to expand our distribution and continue to represent such a strong brand.”

That same excitement was echoed by Beechwood Sales and Service Statewide Craft Sales Manager, Cliff Kaplan: “I can’t deny the excitement that both myself and our team felt with the news of an opportunity to expand our reach with this amazing brand. In just a few short years I have personally witnessed the rapid and meteoric growth of Third Space amidst a highly charged and competitive craft beer landscape.  The success we have collectively enjoyed is a tribute to their exceptional brewing, marketing, and a genuine understanding of our contemporary craft culture.

Ken Eggen, President of Dean Distributing, added: “Dean Distributing is very excited about the expansion of Third Space Brewing into its northern territory. Despite last year’s pandemic, Dean Distributing had tremendous success selling Happy Place, their flagship brand, along with other Third Space beers, in the Green Bay area. With this expansion, we will be able to offer the Third Space craft beers to a much larger consumer base, so more people can find their Happy Place.

To meet the needs of the new markets and continued growth in demand, Third Space Brewing has installed two new 90-barrel fermentation tanks in 2021. In recent years, Third Space has also invested heavily in upgrading its quality program, hiring a full time Quality Manager, and commissioning a new canning line and centrifuge.  Third Space Brewing has grown its team to a total of 35, including 19 full time employees.

“Expansion is about more than just brewing and selling more barrels of beer each year,” added Co-Founder & Brewmaster, Kevin Wright. “We are also growing internally as a business, becoming more efficient, and making sure we are taking care of our growing staff who make this production brewery and tap room function at a high level.”

The new territory expansion will launch on April 5, 2021, anchored by Third Space Brewing’s year-round favorites like Happy Place, Upward Spiral IPA, Light It Up Craft Lager, and Unite the Clans Scottish Ale. The new territories will also see distribution of Third Space Brewing’s new year-round Heavenly Haze and its popular year-round, Frog Weiss Fruited Sour, along with various new and returning seasonal and special releases.

This is the last Nexus of the Universe release planned for the foreseeable future and it is going to be a delight.

Bourbon Barrel Braggot

Last year we brewed a collaboration with our friends at Eagle Park, a braggot (a unique beer/mead hybrid). We aged the braggot for over a year in a bourbon barrel and it’s now ready to enjoy!

Third Space Celebrates 4th Anniversary Throughout September

In lieu of a big one day Anniversary Party this year, we will be celebrating our 4th Anniversary all September long.

Highlights of the month-long celebration include:

Weekly Features and Special Tappings

Weekly Features

We will feature one of our original core beers each week as we lead up to the release of our 4th Anniversary Beer on September 19th.  The featured beers will be $1-off taps in the tap room and $1-off 6-packs Curbside (except for the Anniversary Beer).

Week 1: Upward Spiral IPA

Week 2: Unite the Clans Scottish Ale

Week 3: Happy Place Midwest Pale Ale

Weekly Instagram Live With Founders

Each week we will highlight the featured beer in an Instagram Live video with our founders.

Special Tappings

Each week we will also tap some special beers. We kick things off week one with a new Experimental IPA and one of our limited barrel-aged variants, 2018 Haunted Maple. Both beers will be tapped Wednesday September 2nd.

Oktoberfest Tapping and Stein Deal

We will also tap our Oktoberfest during week 1 with a special stein deal throughout Labor Day Weekend. We will tap Oktoberfest and open up curbside sales of Oktoberfest 6-packs and 12-packs Friday September 4. Friday-Monday (open Labor Day 12-5), if you buy a Third Space 1-liter stein ($12), your first fill of Oktoberfest is free ($24 value). *That’s not Oktoberfest in the stein pictured below*

A Special 4th Anniversary IPA

Every year we brew a special beer to celebrate our anniversary. This year we brewed up a fuzzy little IPA called Baby Yo. What’s a fuzzy little IPA? It’s a little bit hazy (fuzzy) and low ABV (little).

Baby Yo has notes of tropical fruit, pineapple, coconut, peach and tangerine. It’s 3.9% ABV and 28 IBUs.

Baby Yo Release & Anniversary Package – September 19th

Baby Yo will be available in our tap room Saturday September 19th both on tap and in 6-packs and cases. We will also be selling a special 4th Anniversary Package for $20 that includes a six pack of Baby Yo, a pint of Baby Yo or a special limited variant our brew team is creating, and a new Third Space Willi Becher pint glass. The package will also include an invitation to our Virtual Anniversary Celebration on September 26th at 4pm. Reserve Your Anniversary Package Here

A limited amount of Baby Yo 6-packs will also be hitting store shelves and tap lines the last week of September. Keep an eye out. This one will go quickly.

September 26th – Virtual Anniversary Celebration

Those who purchase the Anniversary Package will also receive an invitation to our Virtual Anniversary Celebration on Zoom taking place Saturday September 26th at 4:00 p.m.

Weekly Updates

We will post the calendar of event and tappings at the start of each week. We hope to see you at Third Space in person or Curbside throughout the month of September as we celebrate 4 amazing years brewing craft beer in the Brew City!
